Chalk pastels are both a drawing and painterly medium with a broad range of applications. Learn tips, techniques as well as what not to do in this stimulating course for beginners and those with some knowledge. We'll study the work of both contemporary and past pastel artists to inspire you in gaining confidence with your own pastel method.

Course Outline

  • Introduction to chalk pastel materials and surfaces.

  • Introduction to the history of pastels including the work of famous pastel artists and their techniques.

  • Weekly subjects will cover composition, tonal studies, broken colour, blending, charcoal & pastel, dry wash, colour contrast, coloured grounds and other techniques unique to chalk pastel.

  • Subjects include still life, landscape, the environment, animals and portraits.

  • Students are encouraged to learn at their own pace with an emphasis on creativity.

Learning Outcomes

  • Be taught a variety of techniques for working with chalk pastels.

  • Gain confidence with this unique drawing and painterly medium which includes a variety of pastel materials and surfaces.

  • Be encouraged to further explore your preferred pastel technique.

Materials List

  • 2x Mi-Teintes or Art Spectrum 340gsm 230x300 BLACK textured paper

  • 2x Mi-Teintes or Art Spectrum 340gsm 230x300 any colours you prefer tex paper

  • 1x stick willow charcoal or charcoal pencil

  • wet ones for cleaning hands or a soft wet cloth

  • Pastels: Either bring what you have or buy a set of Sennelier or Schminke or Rembrandt or Art Spectrum or Winsor&Newton etc. Alternatively we will discuss what to buy on the first day of the course. There are many wonderful pastel sets to choose from and you can always add more variety to your collection.
